Best gear for cold sleepers

Updated October 5, 2026 · 8 min

As an Amazon Associate, Trailkit Outdoor earns from qualifying purchases. Full disclosure

The XTherm is the cold pad on this page. Three-season pads and wide options are on the main pads page. Best sleeping pads

If you sleep cold at home, you will sleep cold outside. Buy a warmer bag than the forecast suggests, a pad with real R-value, and a hood. Start with the NEMO Disco 15, a spoon-shaped 15°F bag with room at the knees and elbows, plus an XTherm-class pad. The Magma 15 is the slimmer mummy at the same rating. A three-season XLite is not enough on its own for a cold sleeper. A quilt is usually the wrong experiment.

Who this is for. People who steal blankets, sleep in socks, or wake up cold in a 40°F house.

The picks

A spoon-shaped down bag lofted on a pad inside a tent1

Best for active sleepers

NEMO Disco 15

The Disco is for people who wake up because a traditional mummy binds them. The spoon shape is still a bag, not a blanket, so you keep the hood and you still need a pad. Thermo gills help on the nights that are warmer than the rating. You pay in packed volume.

Who should buy it. Active sleepers who have already returned one slim mummy.

Pros

  • Knee and shoulder room
  • Solid warmth class
  • Useful vents

Cons

  • Not the smallest pack size
  • Premium price

A 15-degree down mummy bag lofted on a pad inside a tent2

Best default down bag

REI Co-op Magma 15

The Magma 15 is the practical down mummy: light enough for a weekend, warm enough for a surprise frost, and sold where you can lie in it and return it. Treat 15°F as a limit unless the brand states a comfort rating. Cold sleepers should buy warmer than the forecast, or pair this bag with a high-R pad such as the XTherm, not with a three-season XLite alone. The cut is a slim mummy. If you thrash or sleep with your knees out, a roomier bag is the fix, not a different fill power in the same shape. A quilt such as the Enlightened Equipment Revelation wins only if you sleep warm and will strap it to the pad. The bag is not the pad. Down also fails when it is soaked, so a wet trip is a different choice.

Who should buy it. Backpackers building a first real sleep system for spring through fall.

Pros

  • Usable warmth for the weight
  • Easy to try on
  • Hood that cinches

Cons

  • Slim cut
  • Not expedition fill

A cold-weather insulated air pad on snow-dusted floor on a tent floor3

Best cold-weather air pad

Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XTherm

The XTherm is the pad you add when camps drop near freezing and you sleep cold. It is not required for July in the woods. You can vent a bag. You cannot invent ground insulation you left at home. Still carry a patch kit. Warmth does not make it immortal.

Who should buy it. Cold sleepers extending the season without a full winter kit.

Pros

  • High R-value
  • Still packable
  • Warm sleeper insurance

Cons

  • Price
  • Can sleep hot in summer

A hooded down camp puffy draped over a pack at a cold camp4

Best default camp puffy

REI Co-op Magma Hooded Down

Put this on when you stop. If you hike in it, you will soak the down from the inside, which is worse than rain. The hood is the feature that makes camp tolerable in wind. Return it if the shoulders bind over a fleece.

Who should buy it. Three-season backpackers who need a static layer.

Pros

  • Hood
  • Packs small
  • Returnable

Cons

  • Useless when soaked
  • Too warm to hike in

Not sold on Amazon US.

Closest on Amazon: Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer Hoody. An 800-fill ultralight down hoody that does the same job as the Magma Hooded Down. The price on the listing varies by color.

If you only buy one

Spend the money on the pad and a lower temperature rating before you spend it on a lighter shell.

FAQ

Will a liner fix a cold bag?

It adds a little. It does not turn a summer bag into a frost bag.

Should I wear clothes in the bag?

Dry layers, yes. Damp hiking clothes, no.
