Rain shells

Hard shells for real rain. Pit zips matter more than a logo once you climb.

Under a modest budget, a shell keeps a day of rain out and wets out sooner than an alpine hardshell. Look for a hood that moves with your head, seam tape, and pit zips if you hike uphill in weather.

A rain jacket is not insulation. Wear a fleece under it. Durable water repellent fails when water stops beading. That is maintenance, not a leak, until the seams actually let water through.

How to choose

  • Size the shell over a fleece, not over a T-shirt only.
  • Re-proof when rain sheets off in dark patches.
  • A backup emergency layer is not a week-long trail shell.
