Stoves

Stoves

Canister stoves for three-season trips, liquid fuel for cold, two burners when the car is thirty feet away.

Most backpackers boil water and rehydrate. A small canister stove is the right tool. Wind is the failure mode, not brand prestige. Integrated systems boil fast and fry badly. Liquid fuel is for cold trips and places you cannot count on canisters.

Never run a stove in a tent. Carbon monoxide does not care that the vestibule felt fine. A windscreen is safe only if the stove maker allows it. Trapping heat against a canister is how cheap setups go wrong.

How to choose

  • Match the stove to the menu. Frying wants a real pot and a controllable flame.
  • One small canister is a weekend of boils for two, not a week of real cooking.
  • Practice the igniter at home.
