Base layers
The shirt against your skin should move sweat. The puffy is for when you stop.
A base layer is not insulation you hike hard in. Synthetic shirts dry faster and smell stronger. Merino smells less and dries slower. A sun hoodie is often the better warm-weather shirt than a short-sleeve tee plus sunscreen on the arms.
Cotton next to skin is the layer to leave at home once you are away from the car. It stays wet and it stays cold. At a drive-up campground it is a preference, not a safety problem.
How to choose
- Fit it close, not tight enough to bind under a pack belt.
- Carry one dry shirt that never gets hiked in.
- Sun hoodie first on exposed trail. Thermal layer first when you start cold and will not overheat.
