How to fit hiking boots

Fit boots at the end of the day. Length follows the longer foot. Width follows the wider foot. You want a thumb's width of space in front of the longer toes and no heel slip when you walk a ramp. Do not size up to buy width.

Measure both feet

Feet are not a pair. Trace them or use a shop Brannock and then ignore the number if the boot's last disagrees. Socks should be the hiking socks you will wear, not dress socks.

Walk a ramp, not a carpet

Heel slip shows up on a downslope. Toe bang shows up on a downslope. A carpet in a shop hides both. If the store has a ramp, use it. If your toes touch the front on the way down, the boot is short or your heel is not locked.

Break in before the big day

Leather needs several short walks. Zero drop needs two or three easy weeks. A waterproof membrane that is tight across the top of the foot will still be tight on mile ten. Blisters are a fit problem first and a sock problem second.

FAQ

Are two pairs of socks the fix?

Sometimes for fine-tuning. Not for a boot that is the wrong width.

When do I replace boots?

When the midsole feels dead or the heel counter collapses, even if the upper looks fine.
