Car camping kitchen setup

As an Amazon Associate, Trailkit Outdoor earns from qualifying purchases. Full disclosure

Set up two burners, a table at standing height, three wash bins, and a cooler you drained and pre-chilled. Do not use the backpacking stove as the family cooker. Do not buy a full chuck box before you have cooked two weekends.

Heat for more than one pot

One burner means someone waits. Two burners means breakfast happens. Propane is the car-camping fuel. Keep a spare cylinder. Wind still matters, so a bit of a wind block that does not melt the regulator is worth thinking about.

Wash, rinse, sanitize

Three bins. Scrape food into a bag first, not into the wash water and not into the bushes. A bleach or tablet sanitizing rinse matters more on night three than on night one. Strain scraps so the site does not smell.

Ice is a packing problem

Block ice lasts longer than cubes. Food should be cold before it goes in. Drinks can have their own cooler so you are not opening the food cooler all day. A cheap cooler is fine for one day and dishonest for three.

FAQ

Can I cook in the tent?

No. Carbon monoxide and fire are not ventilation problems you solve with a cracked door.

Is a backpacking stove enough for a family?

No. It is a backup for coffee.
