Desert hiking water planning

Updated October 5, 2026

As an Amazon Associate, Trailkit Outdoor earns from qualifying purchases. Full disclosure

In the desert, carry the water for the miles between sources you trust, and turn around while you still have the water to get back. Shade and salt matter as much as liters.

Plan the liters

There is no creek every hour. Write down the miles and the liters before you leave the pavement. A margin is not optional because a spring was a damp rock last week.

Tell someone the plan, including when you should be back.

Sun and salt

A sun hoodie and a hat reduce how fast you spend water. Electrolyte tablets help salty sweaters. They do not replace volume.

Hike earlier. Midday is when the math gets worse.

Turnaround rules

Decide the turnaround before you are thirsty. If the cache is not there, you do not 'push to the next one' on a guess.

An umbrella can help on open, still approaches. It is useless in wind.

FAQ

How many liters per mile?

It varies with heat, load, and the person. Test on a hot day hike before a remote route.

Can I filter sand?

Settle it first or you will clog the filter. Carry a backup.

Is a phone map enough?

Only if it is downloaded and you still have a paper or GPS backup for the water points.
