A child's first camping trip

As an Amazon Associate, Trailkit Outdoor earns from qualifying purchases. Full disclosure

Make the first trip short, warm, and close to the car. A tall tent, a kid-sized bag, a pad with a real R-value, and a lamp that is theirs will do more than a long hike.

Keep the walk short

A picnic site or a one-mile walk is a success. A heroic mileage goal is how everyone cries. Stop while it is still fun. You can go farther next time.

Pick a place you can leave after dinner if the night goes badly.

Make sleep easy

Kids sleep colder than the rating suggests. Use a bag that fits them and a pad that insulates. No cotton pajamas. A familiar stuffed animal is legitimate gear.

A cabin tent means nobody is crawling over a sleeping toddler.

Give them a job

Their lamp, their snack, their small pack. Do not load the pack to make a point. Show them the camp rule about food and animals in one sentence, not a lecture.

FAQ

What age?

When they can tell you they are cold and they want to be there. There is no prize for earlier.

Tent or cabin?

For the car, a tall tent. For the back, wait until everyone already likes camping.

What if it rains?

Have a backup that is not a forced march. Hot drinks and a short walk still count.
