Camp stove safety

Run a stove outside, on a stable surface, away from the tent. Do not use it as a heater. Check the fire ban. A windscreen is allowed only if the stove maker says so.

Where it runs

Outside. A vestibule feels sheltered and still collects carbon monoxide. A tent is not a kitchen.

Set it where a spill cannot land in your lap or on the sleeping bag. Canisters tip. Pots spill.

Fuel and cold

Canisters sulk in the cold. That is not a reason to put a windscreen against the canister and trap heat. Liquid fuel is the cold-weather tool.

Carry a lighter even if the stove has an igniter. Practice at home.

Fire bans

A stove ban and a campfire ban are not always the same rule. Alcohol stoves are illegal in some forests even when canister stoves are allowed. Read the restriction for the week you are going.

FAQ

Can I cook under a tarp?

Only with real ventilation and never as a heater. When in doubt, step outside.

What puts it out?

Turn the valve off. Do not blow on a canister flame and then grab the pot.

How do I carry fuel?

Upright, capped, and out of the sleeping bag. Used canisters are trash, not fire starters.
