Field note

What down fill power means

Updated October 5, 2026

Fill power measures how much space an ounce of down occupies. Higher fill power means less down is needed for the same loft, which usually means a lighter garment. It does not tell you how much down the maker put in.

Amount matters more

A 1000-fill jacket with very little down can be colder than a 700-fill jacket with a lot of down. Look at fill weight when it is published, not only the fill-power badge.

Down and water

Any fill power collapses when soaked. Synthetic insulation is the wet-weather alternative. Dry the jacket. Do not stuff wet down in a compression sack and forget it.

A hooded down camp puffy draped over a pack at a cold camp1

Best default camp puffy

REI Co-op Magma Hooded Down

Put this on when you stop. If you hike in it, you will soak the down from the inside, which is worse than rain. The hood is the feature that makes camp tolerable in wind. Return it if the shoulders bind over a fleece.

Who should buy it. Three-season backpackers who need a static layer.

Pros

  • Hood
  • Packs small
  • Returnable

Cons

  • Useless when soaked
  • Too warm to hike in

Not sold on Amazon US.

Closest on Amazon: Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer Hoody. An 800-fill ultralight down hoody that does the same job as the Magma Hooded Down. The price on the listing varies by color.

Ultra-light down jacket

Montbell Plasma 1000

The Plasma is a luxury ounce-counter. It is not tougher than it looks. Wear it in camp, not on a bushwhack. If you will own one puffy, a slightly heavier one may be the better only jacket. If you already own a burly one, this is the travel piece.

Who should buy it. Experienced hikers shaving jacket weight.

Pros

  • Extremely light
  • Warm for the mass
  • Stuffs tiny

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Delicate shell

High-end narrow mummy

Western Mountaineering Alpinlite

Western Mountaineering bags are sewn as tools. The Alpinlite is warm for its rating class and tight if you sleep in a starfish. Try the girth, not the stuff sack. It is a poor value if you only camp twice a summer.

Who should buy it. People who sleep cold, know they like a mummy, and will use it for years.

Pros

  • Warm for the weight
  • Durable shell
  • Hood that actually closes

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Narrow cut
