A quilt strapped down to a sleeping pad

Field note

Why backpacking quilts feel drafty

Updated October 5, 2026

A quilt has no hood and no insulated underside. It assumes the pad is the underside. If you roll off the pad or the quilt gaps at your neck, you feel a draft and blame the temperature rating.

The fixes

Use the pad straps. Wear a hat. Buy a width you can actually stay inside. A 20°F quilt on a summer pad still feels cold from below.

When to switch

If you thrash, buy a zippered bag with a hood. Do not buy a second quilt in the same shape and hope.

Best quilt

Enlightened Equipment Revelation

A quilt is not a cheaper bag. The Revelation is the common custom quilt people finish hikes in, because it vents on mild nights and does not bind the knees. It has no hood. If you sleep cold or kick covers off at home, buy a mummy. Use the straps.

Who should buy it. Side sleepers who already own a pad with enough R-value.

Pros

  • Vents on warm nights
  • Lower weight
  • Kinder to side sleepers

Cons

  • Drafts without straps
  • No hood

Not sold on Amazon US.

Closest on Amazon: Sea to Summit Ember Down Quilt. An ultralight down backpacking quilt from Sea to Summit. It sits in a higher price band than the Revelation.

Quilt for controlled sleepers

Enlightened Equipment Enigma 20

The Enigma is the quilt people mean when they say a quilt. It has no hood and no zipper. Pair it with a warm hat and a pad strap. If you sleep cold or you roll, buy a bag with a zipper and a hood instead.

Who should buy it. Warm sleepers who want less fabric under their body.

Pros

  • Light
  • Custom widths exist
  • Less fabric under you

Cons

  • No hood
  • Drafts for active sleepers

Budget down quilt

Outdoor Vitals Summit Loft 20

Use it as a trial. If you wake up cold at the shoulders, the fix is a pad strap and a hat, not another quilt in the same pattern. If you still hate it, a hooded bag was the right purchase.

Who should buy it. Hikers curious about quilts who sleep fairly still.

Pros

  • Lower price for a quilt
  • Light
  • Simple

Cons

  • Drafts
  • Quality control stories vary by batch

FAQ

Are quilts lighter?

Yes, if you sleep in a way that lets you use one.

Can I wear a jacket to compensate?

A dry jacket helps a marginal night. It does not fix a gap at the shoulder.
