Field note

What three-season gear means

Updated October 5, 2026

Three-season means nights that are not winter. Expect rain, wind, and the occasional freeze, not a snow load on the tent or a week below zero. Four-season tents and winter bags are a different catalog.

The edges of the season

Late fall can be winter in the mountains. A three-season tent vents instead of shedding snow. A 30°F bag is a summer bag for a cold sleeper.

What you add

Microspikes, a warmer pad, and a real puffy extend the season. They do not turn a tarp into a winter tent.

Gear that shows the point

A solid freestanding two-person tent pitched at a forest campsite1

Solid first freestanding tent

MSR Elixir 2

The Elixir is what you buy when the trip is two nights and the person pitching it has never done it in wind. It is the wrong tent to carry for a week. The gear loft and the footprint are useful, not magic.

Who should buy it. Beginners whose miles are short and whose budget is not in ultralight fabrics.

Pros

  • Easy pitch
  • Real vestibules
  • Durable enough for granite

Cons

  • Heavy
  • Bulkier pack size

A 30-degree down mummy bag lofted on a pad inside a tent2

30°F down mummy, widely available

REI Co-op Magma 30

Treat the 30°F number as a limit, not a comfort promise. Cold sleepers should think of this as a summer bag and add a warmer pad before they add a liner. The draft collar on warmer Magma models matters more than a logo.

Who should buy it. Hikers who sleep in the 40s and want down that packs small.

Pros

  • Packs small
  • Responsible down in current production
  • Hood

Cons

  • Too cold for many 30°F nights
  • Down fails when soaked
Chain microspikes on a boot on an icy trail3

Default microspikes

Kahtoola MICROspikes

Use them on packed snow and moderate ice. Take them off on dry rock so you do not skate or damage the chain. They are not crampons. If the route is steep enough to warrant an ice axe, turn around or bring the real tools and the skill. Size them to the shoe.

Who should buy it. Shoulder-season hikers on icy trails.

Pros

  • Stable on packed ice
  • Fit over hiking shoes
  • Widely understood

Cons

  • Wrong tool on steep alpine ice
  • Wear out if worn on pavement

FAQ

Can I camp in snow in a three-season tent?

A dusting is not a winter. A forecast snow load is a different trip.

Is three-season good enough for a first overnight?

Yes, if the forecast agrees.
