Load maps at home. Learn the menu at home. A GPS in a pocket you have never opened is heavier than a paper map. AA lithium cells are the cold-weather choice. It will not send an SOS. Pair the idea with a messenger if the corridor is remote.

Who should buy it. Hikers who want a dedicated tracker.

Best for. A dedicated GPS that runs on AA cells

Standout limitation. Slower to use than a phone app
