Best hiking daypacks

This page is day and long-day packs. For a rain shell and the rest of a first overnight kit, use the first overnight page. Best gear for a first overnight

A day hike needs water, a shell, a layer, and food. The Osprey Talon 22 is the daypack with a hip belt that takes the water weight off your shoulders. The REI Co-op Trail 40 is the bigger option when a long day needs more water and layers; treat it as a long-day pack, not a multi-day haul. A rain shell for the first night out stays on the first overnight page. All-day rain shells are on the rain jackets page.

Who this is for. Day hikers replacing a school backpack or a commuter bag. Not a multi-day pack list.

The picks

A 22-liter daypack with hip belt standing on trailhead gravel1

Best daypack

Osprey Talon 22

Most day hikes do not need a commuter bag or a 65-liter backpack. The Talon 22 sits in the middle: a hip belt that takes the water weight off your shoulders, a place for bottles or a bladder, and enough room for a shell and a layer. It is not an overnight pack. A sleep system will not fit, and forcing it in is how people buy a pack that is too small and then hate it. The REI Trail 40 is the neighbour when a long day needs more water and layers, or when a first overnight kit is compact. The Atmos AG 65 is the neighbour when the trip is multi-day and the load needs a real frame. The Tempest is the women's counterpart of this daypack. Put the rain shell in it even when the morning looks clear.

Who should buy it. Day hikers who are tired of shoulder-only bags.

Pros

  • Real hip belt
  • Stable
  • Right size for a day

Cons

  • Too small for a sleep system
  • Not ultralight

A 40-liter overnight pack standing on trailhead gravel2

Best first overnight volume

REI Co-op Trail 40

Most first overnights do not need 65 liters. Extra volume becomes extra stuff. The Trail 40 class is the reminder. If your bag is a large synthetic mummy, you may need more pack. Try the load at home before you are standing at the trailhead.

Who should buy it. New overnight hikers with a modest kit and a short distance.

Pros

  • Right size for many first nights
  • Easier to lift
  • Less expensive than a flagship 65

Cons

  • Tight with bulky sleep gear
  • Not a winter pack

If you only buy one

Buy a 20- to 28-liter pack with a hip belt. Put the rain shell in it even when the morning looks clear.

FAQ

Hydration bladder or bottles?

Bottles are easier to fill in a stream and harder to forget. A bladder is easier to sip. Either is fine if you actually drink.

How much water?

More than you think on a hot exposed trail. Know the next source.
