As an Amazon Associate, Trailkit Outdoor earns from qualifying purchases. Full disclosure

This page is multi-day framed packs. If your kit is already light, the ultralight page covers Mariposa, Southwest, Kakwa and Exos. Best ultralight backpacks

Fit the torso before you compare pockets. For hot miles and a normal load, the Osprey Atmos AG 65 is the ventilation example. For a pack you live out of, the Gregory Baltoro 65 is the organization example. The Deuter Aircontact Core 60+10 is the load-hauling example. The Granite Gear Crown3 60 is the lighter framed pick when you do not need a trampoline back panel. Ultralight cottage packs are on the ultralight packs page. Daypacks are on the daypacks page.

Who this is for. Hikers choosing a multi-day framed pack. Women's fits are different model names. Not an ultralight cottage-pack list and not a daypack list.

The picks

A 65-liter pack with a suspended mesh back standing on trailhead gravel1

Best ventilated 65

Osprey Atmos AG 65

The Atmos AG 65 is in this catalog as the hot-weather ventilation example, not as a winner for every torso. The product is the mesh gap between your back and the pack. That gap helps on sweaty miles with a normal multi-day load. It does not help if the hip belt misses your iliac crest, because a ventilated pack that sits on your shoulders is still a bad fit. Osprey's warranty reputation is broader than a defect-only policy, which matters over years of use. Women's fit is the Aura, not this name. Next to it, the Gregory Baltoro 65 is the pack you live out of, with more organization and less of that air gap. The Deuter Aircontact Core is the one that earns its weight when the load is honestly heavy. Fit two of them with about 25 pounds before you compare pocket counts.

Who should buy it. Hikers in heat whose load is a normal multi-day kit, not a winter haul.

Pros

  • Back ventilation
  • Strong warranty reputation
  • Rain cover on many versions

Cons

  • Less pocketed
  • The mesh panel is another fit variable

A heavily pocketed 65-liter load-hauling pack standing on trailhead gravel2

Best organized 65

Gregory Baltoro 65

The Baltoro is the organization example in the Osprey comparison. Lid, pockets, and a harness people trust with a heavier week. Ventilation claims change by year, so try it loaded. Gregory's warranty is typically defect-focused. The women's sibling is the Deva, not a resized men's pack.

Who should buy it. Multi-day hikers who want a place for every small item.

Pros

  • Organization
  • Stable carry reputation
  • Lid layout

Cons

  • Can run warmer
  • Warranty is narrower than Osprey's

Ventilated load hauler

Deuter Aircontact Core 60+10

Deuter fits some backs better than Osprey and some worse. The only useful test is weight on your torso. This is the wrong pack to buy for a 12-pound base weight. It earns its mass when the food bag is large.

Who should buy it. Hikers carrying winter loads or bulky car-to-camp-adjacent loads on trail.

Pros

  • Air channel
  • Carries heavy weight
  • Durable

Cons

  • Heavy empty
  • Less trendy, harder to find in some shops

A light framed 60-liter pack standing on trailhead gravel4

Light framed budget pack

Granite Gear Crown3 60

The Crown is the pack to try before you spend Atmos money. If 30 pounds hurts in the shop, a more padded harness is worth the cash. If your load lives under that, this is enough pack. The Crown3 replaced the Crown2. Granite Gear rates it to 35 lb with the frame sheet in, and you can take the sheet out for loads under 25 lb.

Who should buy it. Hikers building a first serious kit on a budget.

Pros

  • Light
  • Fair price
  • Removable parts

Cons

  • Less comfortable at high loads
  • Torso length is fixed, so the size has to be right

If you only buy one

Try two packs loaded with about 25 pounds. Buy the one whose torso length is right. Ignore features if the hip belt misses your iliac crest.

FAQ

Often 40 to 50 liters if the sleep system is compact. 65 if the kit is bulky.

Atmos or Baltoro in summer heat?
