How to pack a bear canister

Put anything that smells like food, trash, or toiletries in the canister if the rule says so. Pack the canister where it actually fits. Sleep away from it. Do not decide this at the trailhead in the dark.

What goes in

Food, trash, toothpaste, sunscreen, and the empty dinner pouch. If you would not want a bear to investigate it, it goes in. Smell-proof bags are an extra layer inside the canister, not a replacement.

Water does not need a canister. Your stove fuel might be regulated separately. Read the permit.

Fit it in the pack first

A BV500 is a cylinder that mocks a small pack. Stand it vertical and rebuild the pack around it at home. If it does not fit, you need a bigger pack or a shorter trip, not a creative strap job that falls off.

Learn the lock at the kitchen table. Cold hands at camp are slower.

Where it sleeps

Follow the local rule for distance from camp. A canister in the tent is how a curious animal joins you. A canister used as a chair is a story people tell and a bad habit.

An Ursack is not the workaround where canisters are required.

FAQ

Are canisters required everywhere?

No. They are required in specific parks and zones. Hangs are required or wiser in others. Check.

Can I hang a canister?

You should not need to. Set it on flat ground as instructed so it cannot roll away.

What if I am only out one night?

The rule does not shrink with the trip.
