Leave no trace at camp

Cook and store food away from the tent, wash 200 feet from water, put the tent on a durable surface that already exists, and follow the local fire rule. The gear does not matter if the site looks worse when you leave.

Food smells are a storage problem

Use the site's box, a required canister, or a hang that the local rules actually accept. A stuff sack in the vestibule is how animals learn tents. Pack out scraps, including wash water with food in it.

Soap and lakes do not mix

Even biodegradable soap is soap. Wash dishes and yourself far from the water and scatter strained water. Three bins make this easier. They are not a license to dump pasta water in the creek.

The tent site already exists

Use a pad or a spot that is already bare. Do not trench around the tent. If you need a fire, use an existing ring where fires are allowed, and do not build a new one because the view is better.

FAQ

Are wipes fine?

Pack them out. They are not fire starter and they are not compost.

What about toilet paper?

Follow local rules. Pack it out unless the land manager says otherwise.
