A fleece and a puffy hung side by side on a pack

Field note

Active layers versus static layers

Updated October 5, 2026

Active insulation is what you can wear while moving without soaking it. Static insulation is the puffy you add when you stop. Using one jacket for both is how down gets wet from sweat.

While you move

A sun hoodie, a light fleece, or an R1-style layer. If you are sweating, you are wearing too much. Start cold.

When you stop

A dry puffy, a hat, and gloves. Put them on at the pass even if you feel tough. Take them off before you hike again.

Patagonia R1 Air

The R1 Air is what you hike in. The puffy is what you put on when you stop. Wearing the puffy uphill is how it gets wet from the inside. This layer needs a shell in rain. It is not waterproof and it is not trying to be.

Who should buy it. Hikers who run cold while moving and hot in a normal fleece.

Pros

  • Breathable
  • Hood
  • Packs smaller than a thick fleece

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Not windproof enough alone on a ridge

REI Co-op Magma Hooded Down

Put this on when you stop. If you hike in it, you will soak the down from the inside, which is worse than rain. The hood is the feature that makes camp tolerable in wind. Return it if the shoulders bind over a fleece.

Who should buy it. Three-season backpackers who need a static layer.

Pros

  • Hood
  • Packs small
  • Returnable

Cons

  • Useless when soaked
  • Too warm to hike in

Outdoor Research Echo Hoody

A sun hoodie is the most useful shirt in a lot of western kits. The hood fits under a hat or instead of one. It is not a warm layer at camp. Rinse salt out of it. A bug-proof weave is a different product if mosquitoes are the actual problem.

Who should buy it. Exposed trails in sun.

Pros

  • UPF
  • Hood
  • Breathable

Cons

  • Not warm
  • Can feel clammy in humidity

Closest on Amazon: Outdoor Research Astroman Air Sun Hoodie (men's). A hooded sun shirt from Outdoor Research. The men's Echo Hoody is not listed on amazon.com, so this is the closest hooded option from the same brand.

FAQ

Can synthetic do both?

Better than down, and still not as well as two layers.

Where does the rain shell fit?

Over the active layer in weather, over the puffy only at camp.
