Field note

Why bear hangs fail

Updated October 5, 2026

A proper hang keeps food well off the trunk and well above the ground. Short trees, crowded camps, and tired hikers produce hangs a bear can reach. Where canisters are required, a hang is not the clever alternative.

When a hang is the plan

Only where it is legal and the trees exist. Practice the knot at home. A stuff sack of food in a low branch is a bait station.

When it is not

Canister or an approved soft bag. Sleep away from the food. The tent is not a pantry.

Clear bear canister

BearVault BV500

If the regulation says canister, a hang is not a clever alternative. The BV500 is bulky in a small pack. Pack it vertical and plan the volume before you buy a 40-liter pack. Learn the opening method at home. Some versions are fiddly with cold hands.

Who should buy it. Sierra trips and anywhere a canister is mandatory.

Pros

  • Often approved
  • See-through
  • Does not depend on a perfect hang

Cons

  • Heavy
  • Eats pack volume

Ursack Major

Check the regulation. An Ursack is not a universal canister replacement. Tie it correctly to the object the instructions name. It will not stop a determined animal if you do it wrong, and it will not stop mice inside your tent. Do not keep food in the tent because the bag feels soft.

Who should buy it. Hikers in Ursack-legal areas.

Pros

  • Much lighter than a canister
  • Packable
  • Approved in some regions

Cons

  • Not universal
  • Must be tied correctly

Not sold on Amazon US.

Closest on Amazon: Ursack Major XL Bear Bag. The same brand's bear-resistant sack in the larger XL size. The standard Major is not listed on amazon.com.
