How to measure backpack torso length

Updated October 5, 2026

Torso length runs from the C7 vertebra at the base of your neck to the iliac crest, where a hip belt should sit. It is not your height. Two people of the same height often need different pack sizes.

Measure it

Tilt your head forward and find the bony bump. Find the top of your hip bones. Have someone measure between them. Then try the pack size that claims that range, with weight.

The belt is the check

If the hip belt sits on your stomach, the torso is too long or the pack is the wrong shape. The weight should land on the crest of the hips.

Gear that shows the point

Value framed 55

REI Co-op Flash 55

The Flash 55 is a sane volume for a modern sleep system. If your bag is a bulky synthetic mummy, look at a larger pack. Load it in a shop with the hip belt on the iliac crest, not on your stomach.

Who should buy it. Beginners buying one pack for three-season weekends.

Pros

  • Easy to find and return
  • Real hip belt
  • Reasonable weight

Cons

  • Average ventilation
  • Heavy loads need a different pack

Not sold on Amazon US.

Closest on Amazon: Osprey Rook 65 Backpack (men's). A framed backpacking pack from Osprey in about the same price band as the Flash 55. At 65 liters it is larger, so it suits a bulkier kit.

Light framed budget pack

Granite Gear Crown3 60

The Crown is the pack to try before you spend Atmos money. If 30 pounds hurts in the shop, a more padded harness is worth the cash. If your load lives under that, this is enough pack. The Crown3 replaced the Crown2. Granite Gear rates it to 35 lb with the frame sheet in, and you can take the sheet out for loads under 25 lb.

Who should buy it. Hikers building a first serious kit on a budget.

Pros

  • Light
  • Fair price
  • Removable parts

Cons

  • Less comfortable at high loads
  • Torso length is fixed, so the size has to be right

Osprey Aura AG 65

Do not buy a unisex pack and hope. The Aura is worth it when the hip belt matches and the load is heavy enough to need the ventilation. It is a lot of pack for a summer quilt kit. Fit the torso in person if you can.

Who should buy it. Women carrying traditional loads who overheat under a flat back panel.

Pros

  • Ventilated back
  • Women's fit
  • Comfortable belt

Cons

  • Heavy
  • Overbuilt for a light kit

FAQ

Do women use a different measurement?

The measurement is the same. The pack shape often is not.

Can I ignore it if the pack is adjustable?

No. Adjustment has a range.
