Field note

What a wag bag is

Updated October 5, 2026

A wag bag is a pack-out kit for human waste. Alpine zones, river corridors, and some deserts require them. You pack it in, you use it, and you throw it in a trash can, not over the hill.

When you need one

Read the permit and the trailhead sign. If burial is banned, a trowel does not override the sign.

How not to ruin the trip

Know how the bag opens before you need it. Double-bag it. Do not strap it outside in the sun against your water bottle if you can put it in an external pocket that is not your food.

TheTentLab Deuce of Spades

Leave No Trace wants human waste buried in a hole the right depth, the right distance from water, and covered. A tent stake is a worse trowel. Know whether the land you are on requires a wag bag instead. Some alpine and desert areas do. The trowel is not permission to ignore the rule.

Who should buy it. Backpackers on trails that allow catholes.

Pros

  • Light
  • Effective
  • Small

Cons

  • Not a wag-bag substitute
  • Easy to lose in the dirt

OPSAK odor bag

An OPsak does not replace a canister or a legal hang. It reduces odor inside the legal container. Replace it when it is full of pinholes. Never store food in your sleeping bag because a bag claims to be smell-proof.

Who should buy it. Anyone storing food in the backcountry.

Pros

  • Light
  • Adds a barrier
  • Cheap

Cons

  • Not legal storage alone
  • Wears out
